Prom
Next Saturday, June 5th, is prom. This is a formal dance hosted by the school to which only upperclassmen(11th and 12th graders) are allowed to go.
Girls buy boutonnieres for their dates. These go on the lapels of the date's suit or tux jacket. Most girls wear full-length formal dresses and many go to hair salons to have their hair styled for the event.
Boys buy corsages for their dates. These go on their date's wrist. The boys rent tuxedos or wear suits that coordinate with the colors of their date's dress.
Before the dance, the girls usually get ready at someone's house. They do their hair, makeup, put on their dresses, and help others get ready as well. Boys usually get together at a friend's house to get ready as well, but not as far in advance.
Groups will meet at a park, someone's house, or some other scenic location to take pictures of the group and individuals with their dates. Then, the group usuall y goes to dinner before going to the dance. Some people even rent limousines to transport them throughout the evening.
The dance lasts 3 hours from 8 to 11pm. During the dance, the Prom King and Queen are revealed. Thesea are individuals voted on by the entire student body.
After the dance, couples will go to get ice cream, go bowling, or hang out at someone's house.
This is an extremely important event for high school seniors especially. It is their last high school dance and usually represents the nearing of graduation.
